Got Healing? Get Hillary

Thursday, June 12, 2008

You want party unity?

I’ll give you party unity.

Barack Obama invites Hillary Clinton to join him as part of the so-called dream team, and I’m in. Obama disrespects her and countless Democrats who comprise the 18 million voters who chose her over him in primaries and caucuses, and I’m out.

Got healing?

Want to mend?

Pick Hillary.

Need to restore the Democratic dream?

Choose Hillary.

She’s change that Obama can depend on.

Snub her and her movement and risk the wrath of a backlash that will spin your head around. Shun her and the new Democratic revolution and you shun the foot soldiers of the party without whom the party crashes and burns.

The myth of women’s lib rebels burning their bras might finally come true.

I might buy one for myself, call it my own, and set fire to the paternalistic constrictions of a good old boys fraternity party that uses women without respecting them morning, noon and night.

People would pay money to see me burn my bra. Then I’d donate the proceeds to real women’s liberation.

The good old days are gone, fellows.

If Obama and his “progressive” partiers really want change, they’ll ask Hillary to come on board. If not, America will clearly see the Obama campaign as a fraud and flee, looking for liberty and justice elsewhere.

Hillary is good enough to work her heart out on behalf of Obama. Hillary is good enough for Obama fundraisers to solicit donations from her biggest contributors. Hillary is good enough to be a role model for Obama’s daughters. Hillary is good enough to compile almost as many delegates as he has and beat him in the popular vote.

But she’s not good enough to join him on the ticket? She’s not good enough to be vice president? She’s not good enough for the fawning political groupies clamoring for change?

You want change, pick Hillary.

The world, let alone the United States, has never seen a ticket like this.

If Obama and his camp don’t reach out, however, the world will see them as obstructionist and phony, intransient and vindictive, and narrow business-as-usual hustlers who play a game as untrustworthy as the Chicago machine politics that created Obama.

Then Democrats can say good-bye to victory.

Then the party’s over.

One mantra of the civil rights movement is that bosses – mostly white and mostly male - can’t continually disrespect qualified people looking for equal opportunity without one day facing them in a dangerous situation.

America now finds itself in a particularly precarious situation. The Republicans can once again win the White House.

Obama/Clinton will rejuvenate the nation, giving a wide cross-section of voters – Democrats, independents and even some Republicans – an option they have never experienced.

Women, young people, gays and lesbians, Latinos, white working-class blue-collar workers and others will have finally unified under the banner of a new America.

All the hope in Obama’s war chest can’t pull this one off. None of Obama’s other picks for VP can strengthen the Democratic ticket against Republican war horse John McCain like Hillary can.

If McCain wins, it will be because Obama lost all common sense and rejected Hillary.

And if he rejects her, he rejects me and countless millions of voters.

That’s the edge that will throw the election to McCain.

If that happens, you asked for it.

I won’t even tell you “I told you so.”
