Let the sun shine!

I was optimistic that Senator Barack Obama could pull it off, but it wasn’t until I saw the happy news on CNN at 11pm ET that I realized there was a part of me that really had doubt. I watched teary-eyed as the throng of supporters waved, hugged and cried in Grant Park when the news broke. I have been proud of my country before, but my heart overflowed with pride on Tuesday night. No more would we let fear and hate and divisiveness rule our lives. I went to bed smiling, and woke up feeling like I had just had a nice hot bath. It felt cleaner. The world has an extra sparkle to it. You can feel the energy in the air. My parents  said they got so many people who honked their horns and waved at them Wednesday morning, all because they had an Obama bumper sticker on their car. It wasn’t just a victory, it was a decisive one, and we are celebrating.
There’s a lot of work to be done. I want President-elect Barack Obama to get in there and right the wrongs that have been done these past 8 years.   I want someone in the EPA who actually cares about the environment, an Attorney General who understands what justice is, people who run key positions who are qualified and capable.  An administration that embraces science and sound reasoning and a President that is willing to listen to opposing points of view.
There has been much speculation about the future of the GOP. I’ll leave that to the Republicans to figure out. It’s silly for anyone to think that they’re out of the game. That’s what people said about the Democrats not so long ago. The Democrats have the keys to the store, and I trust they’re going to do what the Bush administration and the Republican Congress didn’t do….be responsible.
