It was a great day in America. I can’t believe 2 million people stood in the frigid temps in Washington D.C. to witness the first black President being sworn in. They could watched it from the comfort of their cozy home, but they wanted to be there. You really can’t capture the magic of moments like that from afar.
There were boos when the now former President George Bush arrived. I am certainly not a fan of his, but as President Obama said, the time for childish things has passed. Let’s move on.
I liked the speech. I didn’t find any one memorable quote, but it was good. It was clear that there were some jabs to the former Administration. I would have preferred some more punchy remarks but overall it was great. The problem with being such a great speaker is your last speech sets the bar for the next.
I also didn’t think it necessary for the President and First Lady to get out of the car during the Parade. In fact, I watched the entire thing with my eyes half-covered. I’m sorry, but I think it’s more important for the President to be safe than to be unprotected in a security nightmare. I breathed a sigh of relief when they got back in the limo safely.
As for the Inaugural Balls and extensive media coverage, I had no interest in it. The glitz and glamour is not needed right now when there is serious business to be done. Who wore what, and how they danced is nonsense. How we’re going to turn this economy around and get people working is what President Obama, and all of us as Americans, need to be focused on.
