I stared at the Luzerne County court employees job and pay listing in the weekend paper my jaw dropped to the floor. I’m someone who’s complained for many years that our local Chamber of Commerce has been selling our low paid job force as a business enticement for too many years. I want to see our people paid a better wage, but what I see in the salaries and positions in Luzerne County’s court related jobs is nothing short of astonishing. Is it really true that one of the only ways to make money around here is to know someone?
I immediately went to my computer to look the story up and print it out myself. You can find the listing here. It printed a whopping 14 pages. Did you see all the probation officers? I counted 85. They’re making a good deal more than the average wage around these parts. I hope that everyone of these people is qualified and working at their job. Forgive me if I doubt it. In my crazy tinfoil hat world, which I donned after I read the U.S. Attorney’s criminal information on Ciavarella and Conahan, I worry that a number of these people may be collecting a check while doing something else. Now, I don’t know if that’s true, but it’s a real possibility.
There is a light at the end of the long, dark tunnel Luzerne County residents have been travelling through. The good guys and gals are on the job, and I can’t wait until every crooked judge, politician, and county employee stands before us in their true colors. Character is who you are when no one is looking...we’re going to get a good look at them all soon.
Be listening to WILK for the latest on Thursday February 12, when Ciavarella and Conahan officially appear in Federal Court to plead guilty to corruption.
