It’s great to be home. I had a wonderful 2 weeks in the Mediterranean on a cruise. It was a lifelong dream of mine to see Rome, Athens and the Pyramids in Egypt. The trip did not disappoint. There were plenty of other places that intrigued me along the way. My mother and I started out in Barcelona, and the Barri Gotic area there is hauntingly beautiful. The Barcelona Cathedral is amazing. We did not go the Gaudi church because we only had a short period of time. I definitely would like to go back to Barcelona to explore further. In the coming days I’ll post some photos and commentary on the various visits I made. As for cruising, I’m not a big fan of the ‘sea days’. Luckily, we had a port stop every other day so it was good to have a day between to unwind. 'Manufactured fun' on the ship is not my cup of tea, I read a number of books and enjoyed the view from my balcony. Among the stops we made were Rome, Athens, Izmir (Turkey), Cairo, and Malta. We opted for the shore excursions that focused on ancient history. This was a great trip to go on to get a taste of what each place had to offer, rather than immerse yourself in one location.
While it was fun, it’s great to be back home. You really do appreciate the good ‘ole USA after visiting other places, especially places like Cairo where there is a lot of pollution and poverty. I had very little access to information while on the cruise. Internet access is extremely slow, and extremely expensive. The only American news I could get was Fox News on the ship. It was excruiciating to try and get any news from that channel. They only whined about the President every day. He bowed to this guy, he shook hands with the other one, should he get the credit for the Somalia hostage rescue. Then they whined about how mainstream media ignored the Tea Party, and liberal gay advocates caused a beauty pageant contestant to lose her crown. Amazing.
I missed the breaking local news on the school district officials accused of bribery and the Denaple’s dropped charges. Relations have deteriorated even further between the majority Commissioners in Luzerne County. The big question for me is how are residents there going to be able to choose some judges in a field of 17!
On a personal note, this weekend marks the 2 year anniversary of my breast cancer diagnosis. I can’t believe it was that long ago, it seems like yesterday. I am thankful to be doing well, and anxious to move beyond the reconstruction phase. Two months ago I developed a setback during the expansion process on my radiated side. We had to go back to square 1 and I’ll be giving it a second try in the coming weeks. Thank you to those who have sent supportive messages and kind thoughts. They mean the world to me and I appreciate it. If you or someone you know is newly diagnosed or has related issues and you need to talk or want some information, feel free to contact me. We’ll beat this thing together. On June 13th I’ll be part of the Relay for Life at Dunmore High School. It’s the major fundraising for the American Cancer Society, and benefits all cancer patients in the region. We’re looking for teams and donors. You can find out more or give in memory of or support of a survivor here.
