D'Elia, Conahan Invoke 5th At Hearing
Silence is golden. It was also present at a hearing in Allentown yesterday. Former Luzerne County judge Michael Conahan and William D'Elia took the fifth in a defamation case involving the Citizens Voice newspaper. Witnesses who did talk said Conahan and D'Elia....he's described as the alleged heir to the Russell Bufalino crime family.....were good friends and often met at a Perkins to eat omelets and discuss court cases. The plaintiff in the defamation case is Thomas Joseph, another friend of D'Elia's. The newspaper is trying to show that D'Elia and Conahan would meet to discuss "fixing" cases...including Joseph's. He was awarded $3.5 million in the suit against the Voice. Former Luzerne County court administrator William Sharkey also pleaded the fifth.
