Living La Vida Facebook

At the risk of being ridiculed by my good friend and co-hort Sue Henry, I’m blogging today about Facebook. Most people know that facebook is a social networking site where you can run into your old friends, old flames, former teachers (which can be really unsettling) and co-workers from your past. I am finding facebook much more interesting as I glimpse into the everyday happenings of other people’s lives.
Sure, there are the posts about what they’re cooking for dinner, how smart their kids are or the picture of the new car, but it’s what people do with their free time that is most fascinating to me.
Saturday night, my kids and husband were fast asleep by 11:30pm, I was not. Because I get up pretty early during the week, I find myself sitting up reading or watching tv until the wee hours of the morning on the weekends. I was revved up and ready to go all by myself. I wandered to the computer to see all my ‘friends’ on facebook posting from the bar, partying up for their birthday, hanging out on the patio ‘drinking with friends’…fun, alcohol, dancing, eating, fun, fun, fun. I, on the other hand, was in my pajamas watching other people live it up.
I thought that all these people would probably think I live a boring life. Sure, my husband and I will go out to eat once in awhile, but usually by 9pm we start yawning and head back to pick up the kids and go home. I like curling up to a good book, or watching the History Channel or Discovery and eating a banana split at midnight…but I have this suspicion that posting such a thing on Facebook would scream LOSER. So what did I do instead? I played a little ‘typing maniac’ on Facebook and beat my high score. Then, by mistake, I posted my high score on my page for all my ‘friends’ to see. How pathetic, 11:30pm on a Saturday night, and they realize I’m playing a computer game while they’re out having a blast. Somehow that banana split at midnight sounded like a better choice.
I know that there are a great many of you, who, like me, aren’t tripping the light fantastic every weekend (or even once a month). It’s time we bring some reality to Facebook. I realize now how stupid I sound. Insert Sue Henry laugh. Those of you who don’t do much on the weekend must be honest and post that you’re sitting at home staring at the boob tube. Let everyone know that, yes, we like lounging around and doing nothing.  It’s okay to be at home, no flashing disco ball, no screaming over the music, just peace and quiet.  No pictures we'll post and regret in the morning or drunken, rambling updates. The best part is, we don't need a designated driver, and there's no hangover in the morning!
