AUDIO:Martino steps down, 'great sorrow, insomnia' due to tough decisions

The Diocese of Scranton held a news conference this morning to announce the resignation of Bishop Joseph Martino and Archbishop John Dougherty.  The Pope accepted the resignations this morning.

Bishop Martino spoke at the news conference, saying that he had to make very hard decisons in his 6 year tenure and he's suffered 'great sorrow", "insomnia" and crippling physical fatigue".  Martino said in a statement, "For some time now, there has not been a clear consensus among the clergy, and people from the Diocese of Scranton regarding my pastoral initiatives or my way of governance". The 63 year old Martino said the Diocese needs a physically vigorous leader and he's not that person. He also asked forgiveness from anyone he had not served adequately.  Cardinal Justin Rigali of the Philadelphia Diocese will serve as the administrator of the Diocese until a replacement is named.  Rigali appointed Monsignor Joseph Bambera as his delegate.
